Flock Competition 2014 - Report

Firstly we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered this year’s Flock Competition for their hospitality and helpfulness, it was great to have been able to spend time with you and find out more about your particular enterprises.

We felt very privileged to have been asked to judge this important competition, it was an opportunity for us to see first-hand how different variations of the breed are working in each part of the country, and in particular individual blood lines.  We were interested by the diverse management systems that we saw including frequent lambing and organic flocks and it was definitely worthwhile taking time to hear how each entrant saw their flock progressing into the future and even ideas for the breed as a whole.

We set out looking for flocks exhibiting good breed type and character with structural soundness and correct condition, also we wanted to see a progression within the flock and stock rams enabling future goals.

Our Champion was the Winner of the large flock category, The Ballytaggart Flock from Thomas Wright ticked all the boxes.  The flock ewes were very powerful with great conformation, his winning ewe lambs were bold and stylish covering a lot of ground and this, combined with an exceptional group of stock rams,  several of which were homebred, made Thomas a worthy winner.

Our Reserve Champion and Winner of the medium flock category was The Manor Croft Flock from Tom Clarke.  A tremendous group of top quality uniform ewes together with a strong evenly matched bunch of ewe lambs whose presentation was second to none made Tom a very close runner up.

The Winner of the small flock category, The Beechmount Flock from Amy McConnell were a strong bunch of correct, deep bodied ewes with a very upstanding modern stock ram who we are sure will continue to compliment  her flock in the future.

The award for the best shepherded flock this year goes to Sam Driver of The Sandy Lane Flock, we were both very impressed with Sam’s management, seeking optimum performance through frequent lambing and still maintaining a quality ewe with real longevity; despite the scale of the enterprise Sam still had a keen eye for breeding and was able to identify individuals within the flock.

Well Done.
