Dorset Flock Competition

Dorset National Flock Competition 2017

It was an honour and privilege to be asked to judge the 2017 Dorset National Flock Competition. We would like to thank all those who participated, for making it enjoyable and educational and their generous hospitality. We were welcomed onto their farms and into their homes it was a real pleasure.

Our travels commenced in Cornwall, travelling north via Wales and as far north as Yorkshire and back down to Kent finally finishing in Northern Ireland. We saw Dorset sheep grazing from 1100 ft above sea level to 3ft below sea level in the Romney Marshes showing the versatility of the breed.

We were impressed by the enthusiasm of the breeders and how they presented their flocks and could only admire the standard of those flocks. We soon realized that this was going to be no easy task, everywhere we went we were shown good quality sheep with strong character that were well cared for and in their prime.

Having judged the flock competition with Thomas Wright (Ballytaggart Flock) ten years ago I could see the breed is moving forward. The sheep are stronger with good character and conformation, fast becoming the butcher and house wife's first choice. The flocks I had visited in the past were stronger, the newly established flocks were showing great potential with good quality foundation stock and the same enthusiasm as the longer established flocks. I would encourage all the breeders to participate in the flock competition it is a good way to promote your flock and the breed.

For those not placed this time don't be disheartened as all the flocks who entered have the potential for success in the future. We would like to congratulate the flocks who were placed in the overall results.
