“The Pirbright Institute have been in touch as they are doing some research/trials on a vaccine for Rift Valley Fever (the virus is not present in the UK but it is one of those that gets mentioned as likely to arrive one day). They need 24 ewes to do their trial work on, all of which will need to be at Pirbright on or before the 7th August, and in lamb but for no more than 49 days. This means they will need to be tupped on or soon after the 5th June.
Thinking this through, if we are able to help, then Poll or Dorset Horn sheep might fit the bill best, and given the fact they have to be killed after the trial then a group of older ewes destined to be culled might suit.
I wonder if you have anyone in the society that you think might be able to supply such a group of sheep. I am working on the understanding that Pirbright would be purchasing these animals”.
